Downtown’s Civic Center is known as the largest concentration of government employees in the United States outside of Washington D.C. Now, a private developer will try to add a new element to the neighborhood: residents. According to plans filed with the City of Los Angeles, a mixed-use tower is slated for a surface parking lot at 2nd Street and Broadway. The project site, which also fronts Spring Street, would birth a 30-story building featuring 107 condominiums, 534,000 square feet of offices and approximately 7,200 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The parking lot is already a hub of activity due to construction for the Regional Connector, a $1.55-billion subway tunnel which will link Union Station to 7th Street/Metro Center Station. The tower would be built directly above the future 2nd/Broadway Station, one of three new stops on the 1.9-mile route. The property is located across the street from Times Mirror Square, which is best known as the longtime headquarters of the Los Angeles Times. The Art Deco office complex was recently purchased by Onni Group, a Vancouver-based real estate firm that will reportedly demolish a 1970s addition to property in order to build apartments.
