A series of commercial properties just outside of Marina del Rey could give way for a large mixed-use development. Last week, plans were filed with the City of Los Angeles to construct a residential-retail complex at 13450 W. Maxella Avenue. The approximately 6.8-acre site, located east of Lincoln Boulevard, is currently developed with shopping center and an associated parking lot. Its is unclear which, if any, existing buildings would be affected. According to a case filing from the Department of City Planning, the project would create a total of 658 apartments - including 66 affordable units - situated above 27,300 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The height and layout of proposed development is unclear. The property, built in the late 1970s, came under the ownership of RREEF Real Estate in 2006. Recent years have seen the redevelopment of several nearby properties into multifamily residential buildings, including a portion of the shopping center. A complimentary outdoor mall located across Maxella Avenue recently completed a comprehensive makeover. Multiple discretionary approvals would be required to move the project forward, including a general plan amendment and a zone change.
