Later today, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission will review a proposed development which would add a new hotel to an existing commercial complex in Koreatown. The Grand Spa Hotel, slated for a nearly half-acre parking lot at 6th Street and Commonwealth Avenue, would consist of a six-story building designed by Los Angeles-based SBL Architecture.  Plans call for 99 guest rooms on the building’s four upper levels, a spa and fitness center on the second floor, and an at-grade and below-grade parking garage capable of accommodating 144 vehicles and 85 bicycles. According to planning documents, the new building would stand flush with an existing three-story structure that contains a ground-floor restaurant, as well as a basement karaoke studio and health spas on its upper floors. Elevation plans indicate that the hotel would feature substantial street-level landscaping, as well as exterior finishes including aluminum sheets, stucco, metal cladding and trespa siding. The project will require numerous entitlements to be built as currently planned, including a zone change, conditional use permits and a variance  to allow for a larger number of compact parking spaces. Further details about the proposed hotel are unclear at this point in time. Directly across the street, developer Century West Partners is in the midst of construction on a new mixed-use complex that will feature 398 apartments and a ground-level Target Express.
