Developer Townscape Partners’ plan to build a $300-million development near the Sunset Strip is moving forward - with conditions. Yesterday, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission (CPC) voted unanimously to approve the proposed mixed-use complex at 8150 Sunset Boulevard. The project, designed by the famed architect Frank Gehry, would feature a total of 249 residential units and approximately 65,000 square feet of retail space in buildings ranging from 5 to 15 stories in height. The CPC granted approval to the development under the stipulation that Townscape reserve 15% of its apartments for low-income households, or approximately 37 units. The proposal had originally called for 28 units of affordable housing. Gehry, who presented architectural plans to the Commission, emphasized the project’s prominent location at the gateway to the Sunset Strip. His design calls for for curving, glass and metal structures with punched windows and multiple terrace levels. Townscape’s development has received pushback from both 4th Councilman David Ryu and neighbors in the adjacent Hollywood Hills, who have object to the project’s height and density.
