A final environmental impact report released by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning has revealed a new look for a mixed-use development planned near the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex. The proposed Hollywood Cherokee apartments would rise from an approximately one-acre parking lot located just north of Hollywood Boulevard. Plans from Los Angeles-based Champion Real Estate call for a six-story building, featuring 224 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments above nearly 1,000 square feet of ground-floor restaurant space. The project would include a wide array of residential amenities, including a swimming pool, a fitness center and a four-level garage with parking accommodations for up to 305 vehicles and 252 bicycles. Twenty-four of the project’s apartments would be set aside for very low-income residents, making less than 50% of the Los Angeles median income. According to city records, the project’s new look was crafted by the Santa Monica-based Belzberg Architects Group, in coordination with Withee Malcom Architects. Their redesign for the Hollywood Cherokee Apartments call for a variety of surface materials, including stucco, aluminum, glass, wood and wood veneer. The building would also feature a stepped back rooftop level to provide visual interest and reduce the building scale. Construction of the mixed-use development is scheduled to begin later this year, with delivery expected to follow in 2017.
