One block west of Crenshaw Boulevard, an outpatient facility from nonprofit healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente is under construction on site of a former shopping center. The $90-million project, which broke ground in October 2015, is rising from an approximately 8.6-acre property at the intersection of Marlton Avenue and Santa Rosalia Drive. Plans call for a four-story, 100,000-square foot building which will offer services including diagonistic imaging, family medicine, health education classes, gynecology, opthamology, optometry and pediatrics. The facility will also feature medical labs and a pharmacy. The building, which is being designed by global architecture firm HOK, will include a number of environmentally-friendly elements in an effort to obtain LEED Gold Certification. Solar panels will be incorporated in several areas throughout the project site, and most of the building will employ a photovoltaic rooftop canopy. Approximately 2.5 acres of green space will be included in the project, largely in the form of a two-mile walking path which cuts across the development site. The Baldwin Hills - Crenshaw Medical Offices will become a part of the West Los Angeles Medical Center Service Area, and is expected to serve over 50,000 Kaiser Permanente members. Completion is currently scheduled for mid-2017. The Kaiser facility sits immediately east of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, which is poised for an ambitious redevelopment scheme that would add 2 million square feet of offices, apartments, retail and hotel rooms to the aging shopping center.
