According to an upcoming presentation to the Mid City West Community Council’s Planning and Land Use Committee, an entity known as Candleberry Properties intends to convert a 1950s office building in Beverly Grove into a 176-room boutique hotel. The 11-story structure, located at 6399 Wilshire Boulevard, would be gutted and transformed into the AC Marriott Hotel at Wilshire and La Jolla. As with other establishments under the AC Brand, the project is being marketed as a minimalisty luxury hotel catering to business travelers. Nightly rates would range from $250 to $350. The presentation notes that the proposed development consists entirely of an interior renovation to the building, resulting in no increase in the total footprint or density of the property. The project, which will be handled by R.D. Olson Construction, is scheduled for completion in January 2018. Perhaps the only noticeable alteration to the exterior of 6399 Wilshire is the conversion of two existing rooftop terraces into amenity decks. Renderings portray an indoor-outdoor lounge along Orange Street and a wading pool overlooking Wilshire Boulevard. The developer notes that community outreach thus far has found that many neighbors are either supportive or neutral towards the project, although some have requested measures to address potential noise from the hotel’s proposed roof decks and parking garage. More information can be found at the official Wilshire La Jolla Hotel website. The property sits directly across a parking lot where developer NMS Properties is planning a 15-story apartment tower.
